Instead of users performing actions, passive liveness checks use AI and motion analysis to inspect the user’s background, skin tone, behaviour, blinking, pupil dilation, involuntary user actions, and other biometric characteristics to determine if the person behind the camera is a real user or an animated face.  

Some consider passive checks to be more secure because they happen in the background, meaning that users don’t know when the checks happen and cannot bypass them. These are frictionless forms of liveness checks, and they can help speed up the user onboarding process.
