Career Talks With Suzanna: Dojah Comms Specialist

Career Talks is Dojah’s employee spotlight article series that shines the light on the employees of Dojah that make the magic happen and work behind the scenes to build the products you know and love.

This edition focuses on Suzanna, Dojah’s communications expert, as she walks us through her career journey.

How did you learn about Dojah, and what drew you to the company and mission?

I learned about Dojah from a community of marketing professionals I was a part of. Then I saw they were hiring for the role of Communications Specialist, and that was the first time I got to research and learn more about the interesting problem Dojah was solving for businesses.

What role do you occupy in Dojah, and what do you do in that role?

I work as the communications Specialist and am responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies and initiatives to promote the Dojah brand, products, or services to its target audience. My primary goal is to create and maintain a positive public image for Dojah and ensure we effectively communicate what we do and who we are to stakeholders and customers across all media platforms.

Do the people closest to you understand what you do?

This is an interesting question to which I will say yes. The simplest way I explain what I do to them is that I help businesses shape how they want to be perceived by their target audience, thereby helping them stay profitable. It's easier for them to understand what I do when I explain it that way.

How did you come across this career path?

I've always been interested in writing and strategy, which is the bedrock of marketing. I used to write storybooks and publish articles before I knew those skills could intersect with marketing. I was doing all that before I found myself working for a digital magazine. From there, I became responsible for the strategy and creative direction for Dojah, and that was how I came into marketing fully.

Was this the career you wanted while growing up or the one you stumbled on?

Honestly, I thought I would be a doctor, but I also planned on becoming a journalist at some point. There was no indication that I would have gotten into marketing. As I said, I was writing and doing creative things from a young age. But since I didn't really think, ", Oh, I'm going to be a communications specialist when I grow up," I'll say I stumbled on this career path.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

The fact that I am working well with early-stage startups and helping them to effectively communicate their products and message to their target audience. Working with startups is not for the faint of heart because it is very fast-paced. You must be able to catch up with so much in little time, and I have been able to do this throughout my career. Also, seeing my ideas and contributions receive public appeal and translate to success back for a business are moments I am very proud of.

Any advice for those who want to pursue this career path?

Don't ignore the power of community. I got my current role because of community, and I have also learned a lot because of communities. So when starting out, you need to surround yourself with the right community. You will grow faster that way because you'll find people to inspire you and directly or indirectly learn from.

What are your career goals in 2023 and beyond?

I look forward to leading more creative and successful marketing campaigns. I'm pining for something at a godlike level that I can add to my portfolio 😆. I'm looking to explore creative ideas and storytelling that defy the normal and produce great results. I'm also working towards climbing the career ladder, taking on more exciting projects, and just witnessing growth generally.
