Five Years of Dojah: Building Africa’s Trust Infrastructure

Five Years of Dojah: Building Trust, One Decision at a Time
Five years ago, Dojah started with a problem we hadn't planned to solve.
In 2021, while building Expensee, we experienced firsthand how difficult identity verification could be across African markets. Data sources were fragmented, integrations varied from one market to another, and something as fundamental as establishing who a customer was could quickly become a barrier to growth.
We started solving that problem for ourselves. Then we realized we weren't the only ones facing it. Businesses across Africa were trying to build digital products, onboard customers, and expand into new markets while navigating the exact same fragmented identity infrastructure. That realization became Dojah.

We started with identity. The problem became bigger.
Our earliest products focused on making identity verification and compliance easier to access through APIs. The question we were helping businesses answer was relatively straightforward: Is this person who they say they are?
That work took us further than we could have imagined in those early days. Within our first year, we onboarded more than 500 businesses across five African countries and processed over two million API calls—momentum that carried us into Y Combinator’s Winter 2022 cohort.
But working closely with businesses taught us something critical: verification was only one part of trust. A customer could be legitimate when they signed up and become risky later. An account could be compromised, or fraud could emerge through a transaction, device, or unusual behavior long after onboarding was complete.
The question was changing. It wasn't only Who is this person? It was also Can this activity be trusted? And Dojah had to evolve with it.
From verification to continuous risk
In 2023, we expanded into fraud detection with EasyDetect, helping businesses identify suspicious activity beyond traditional identity checks. That evolution continued with Profiled Risk, bringing identity, compliance, and fraud signals together to help businesses understand risk continuously.
Today, Dojah provides the infrastructure that enables businesses to verify, detect, decide, and act across the entire customer lifecycle.
Identity remains an important foundation, but we've learned over the last five years that trust isn't established once—it changes. As customers transact, devices change, behaviors evolve, and new signals emerge, businesses need infrastructure that can help them understand those shifts and respond to risk in real time. That is the problem we are building for today.

Five years, in numbers
Along the way, Dojah has grown from an idea born out of our own frustration into infrastructure used by businesses across Africa:
- 50M+ identities verified
- 500+ businesses onboarded
- 10+ African countries covered
- Millions of API calls processed
Those numbers mean a lot to us, but they don't tell the whole story. Behind every milestone is a business that trusted us with an important part of its infrastructure, a customer who challenged us to build better, a partner who believed in what we were building, and a team member who helped turn an ambitious idea into something businesses depend on every day.
The people behind the five years
Building trust infrastructure comes with heavy responsibility. Reliability and accuracy matter. Understanding the markets we're building for matters.
Over the last five years, our team across engineering, product, compliance, partnerships, customer success, and every other part of Dojah has carried that responsibility. We've built things that worked and learned from things that didn't. We've entered new markets, expanded our products, and changed our thinking as the problems facing our customers changed.
Through all of it, one principle has remained constant: Trust is not a single check. It is a system. Building that system has always been bigger than any single product or milestone.
To our customers who chose to build with us, our partners who backed us, and every current and former Dojah team member who contributed to this journey: thank you. Dojah would not be five without you.

What comes after five?
Africa's digital economy today looks very different from the one we started building for in 2021. More businesses are operating digitally and across borders. Customer journeys are becoming more complex, fraud is evolving, and businesses increasingly need to make decisions using signals that extend far beyond identity.
We believe the infrastructure for trust has to evolve with that reality. The next chapter of Dojah is about going deeper into fraud, risk, and decisioning—connecting the signals businesses need to understand not just who someone is, but whether an interaction can be trusted as risk changes.
Five years ago, we started by trying to make identity verification work better. Today, we're building the trust infrastructure Africa's digital economy needs to grow safely.
We’ve come a long way in five years, but as far as we're concerned, we're just getting started.
